Today's Favorite Passage

No one said anything for a moment. Paul's aches lessened, perhaps allowing him to consider the grander issue at hand. Not that a desire to live wasn't high on his list of things to accomplish that day. He swallowed hard as he formed the words for his counter threat.

Today's Favorite Passage

Paul cleared his throat and swallowed. "Shut up, hen. I need to think."

The world jolted as though it collided with another planet.

Paul shook his head. He was on his butt. Had she really hit him? He worked his jaw. Seemed hinged together okay, but it hurt, as did the whole side of his head.

"That was uncalled for!" he shouted.

"Seemed the thing to do," she said. "Just came upon me."

"Well! Don't be come upon again!"

Today's Favorite Passage

"Ya'd think he'd been away from the inn's dining room for a year," Louisa mumbled.

Paul chuckled. "I got no snout, but this smells might good to me."

Selene's hoarse shout spun Morgan around. Bacchus flew back into his hand as he ran out the door. Paul groaned. So they had turned up after all. He looked back at the array of food. He'd much rather eat and flirt with Louisa, than go outside and die. Really didn't wish to die, but he forced himself to walk for the door.

Today's Favorite Passage

"Someone have issue with Ike? They best not rile him."

Selene whipped a questioning look at Morgan for a split second. "No. Your warlock friend here, and his apprentice."

Taiz'lin glared down at Morgan. "Since when are you my friend?"

"Not my claim," Morgan muttered.

An awful din rose from the dragon's chest, something like an avalanche. The hunk of elk that had been wedged in his teeth dislodged with the laugh and flew past Paul's head barely missing him, slammed against the side of the cabin, and slid down the wall with a sickening glop.

Today's Favorite Passage

Walking toward the front of the cabin, Paul peered into the foggy gloom of the forest. Despite the early hour, the birds were well embarked into their day. Crows cawed in every direction, reporting whatever it was that interested them. The hammer of a woodpecker echoed from somewhere, seemingly everywhere at once, and a pair of jays complained, probably about the racket their cousin's raised.

Today's Favorite Passage

"Too quiet out here," the warlock mumbled. "Something's not right."

"Quiet all right."

"No," Morgan said. "Too quiet."

Too quiet? He couldn't grasp what the ogre meant, so he would have to force another query on the warlock, even if he was already tired of Paul's questions.

"How can a forest be too quiet?"

"Listen."

Paul held his breath and cocked his head like Morgan. Far overhead in the peaks, the mountains heaved as though mourning.

"Regular forest sounds," Paul mumbled. "The wind in the trees."

"No chattering squirrels, jays, crows. No varmints scurrying for safety, hearing our approach. Rare to go an hour without hearing a bull elk calling out this time of the season. Ruttin' season approaching. The bulls will be serious about herding together their harems. The hills are silent. Something's not right."

Today's Favorite Passage

Not that Morgan was a bull experienced in such matters, but females appeared to be a fickle sort. Fail once to act as though they didn't fill the sky and oceans with bliss, and their indifference could sear you like a hot branding iron.

When Rules Collide

My YA suspense, Cockroach Crusade, fails to follow the wizdom that a hook requires action. You have to wait, oh my God! until the first line of the second chapter to get to the abduction.

My most recent critique recommended I start with the abduction.

But not knowing the characters, the action I argue, would have no context.

As a reader I hate to scratch my head. I love suspense, but I want the action to make sense as it happens.

Action only matters if you've created empathy for your character.

Today's Favorite Passage

Ike sipped at the whisky in his mug. He struggled not to make a face. It wasn't his kind of drink. Tasted like something a blacksmith might use to melt iron.

Louisa of Warlock Apprentice

Just fooling around on the computer. My pencil sketch looked a lot nicer, but the scanner just did her no justice.

(For those who don't know my characters, she's an ogre--not a vampire with confused incisors.)

Self Portrait

While watching TV last night I sketched a self portrait.

I was so struck by how handsome I am, I grabbed a photo of my big brother, Dave. Easy to see that we make the women swoon.
