Snapshots - North Carolina - Bryson City

Greetings from the Hermit Writer. (Better not be tired of NC)

Morning fog swirling among the tree tops

I love old tree snags.

...and crows

A bit of a story about this morning's trails....

NC started a new highway to replace the road that connected it with southern Tennessee, which was submerged under the Tuckasegee when the TVA dammed the river.

However before the funding was completed for the western spur, the TVA had given the proposed land set aside for the highway to The Great Smoky National Park.

NC never got approval to complete the highway through the national park...so the highway ended at this tunnel...the highway is called The Road to Nowhere.

Just past the end of the tunnel, hundreds of miles of trails begin in the fronting National Park. A hiker's Eden!!

  1. Love that road to nowhere. I would like rather a lot more roads to end that way.

  3. A fascinating story about the road to nowhere. We have one like that in one of our national parks also involving a tunnel. Thanks for sharing such beautiful pictures.

  4. The road to nowhere seems to lead to many trails so that must be somewhere.

  8. Wow. This hit hard. I've been wandering around today and everything seemed to be reminding me of home...when I come upon this. I'm for Lincolnton, just outside of Charlotte, and this... Thanks. I mean that very genuinely.
