Sunday Safari - Lake Kissimmee State Park (2)

Greetings from the Hermit-Writer. From a May 18 safari.

Many of the following photos demonstrate the unintended consequences of man's actions. South Florida was criss-crossed with canals to drain the wetlands to create farm and grazing land. Trees like water. They die if the water table changes. I may have mentioned on previous posts...I love trees. I'm no ecco nut...but my chest tightens when I see all the trees in South Florida that have been killed. The forest floors opened to sunshine, the palmettos flourish, which creates an almost uninhabitable environment for anything.

Even in death...trees are beautiful, mysterious, and intriguing to me.

This simple shot epitomizes my feeling of the outdoors...God's cathedral.

One of those damn canals that killed South Florida.

Have a great week

  3. That's a painful sight to behold. And I have to agree with Adrian. It has its beauty still.

  4. I feel just as you do about trees. Living and dead. And about our thoughtless/greedy actions which see so many things die.

  5. Yes, definitely intriguing tree shots here! but so sad about the ones that die. It's too bad people don't realize the effects and consequences of their actions. :(

  7. Beautiful photos, as usual.

You should check out a CD from Enya called "The Language of Trees." When I see your photos, I'm reminded of her music.

  9. I completely agree with you, even at their worst possible condition there is much beauty and shelter for other living things.

  11. Yes! The character of trees. I've always loved that. Why did canals kill south Florida? Sorry, I really don't know! Oh, and I loved your words: God's Cathedral. Awesome.
